Monitor Support Bowl?

While visiting a client’s office very recently I came across this setup.  I have to be honest and say, this is a first.  Usually we see several Yellow Pages phone books (who uses them anyway) stacked up with the monitor on top.  This one appears to be a bowl turned upside down – probably wouldn’t work the other way.

While this is very creative and solves part of the problem, there are a couple of issues that this raises which can lead to a very poor working condition.

The biggest issue that this solution and others like it create is that the monitor is raised TOO high.  Knowing that this person is about 5’6″ when seated they are going to be looking up at the monitor.  This puts strain and stress on the neck and back (leading to more chiropractic visits) and probably pain during the day and when they go home.  While this may be better than where it was, BB (before bowl) it is still less than ideal.

The second big issue is that the monitor is in a static position.  While this is not uncommon in offices today – it does need to change.  Our bodies change throughout the day from the time we get up to the time we go to sleep.  So we need to change with them as we go about the day.  We need to

  • adjust our chairs
  • adjust our keyboards
  • adjust our viewing of our monitors

Having the monitor on a static pile of phone books or bowls locks the viewing angle as does not allow for changes.

We suggest looking at the SpaceCo Space Arms to support your monitors.

The monitor support arm allows for adjustments up/down, side-to-side and tilt angle.  This particular one allows for all three (options vary by manufacturer).  The key is the ability to adjust your positioning as you go throughout your work day.

So let’s ditch the phone books and bowls and update your office to support your work better.  Your body will appreciate it, your employees will appreciate it as well.
